COMMUNITY NUTRITION

ND 565

Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo County helps those who are food-insecure in the San Francisco Bay Area. They do this by providing food assistance via pantries and other donation sites, assisting those in registering for various benefits available to them, and delivering nutrition education via workshops, food demos and recipe/cooking classes. They receive much of their funding via private donations and federal and state grants.

During my time at SHFB I was able to contribute to a few donation sites and deliver nutrition education to children across all ages.  For my main health promotion and wellness project I created a manual on diabetes education and management. I also contributed to ideas about marketing, evaluation and assessment methods, and other department planning during administrative meetings.

INTRODUCTION

Much of  my experience included educating groups in the community, both children and adults. I created lesson plans and taught to  first grade through high school about MyPlate, sugar-sweetened beverages, and smart snacking. I also created a manual for diabetes education for a pilot program called the Wellness Pantry, being implemented in fall of 2017.

ETHICS & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Module 2

My community nutrition rotation included participating in a department meeting at SHFB where we discussed program plans for the coming year, assessment methods for evaluating objectives and outcomes, marketing methods, and other department plans.

I also developed a mock professional development plan to follow through my internship.

LEGISLATION & PUBLIC POLICY

Module 3

Participating in public policy is key to the innovation in health and dietetic industries. For this module, I contacted both senators regarding food assistance programs in the state of California.

HEALTH PROMOTION & WELLNESS

Module 4

The health promotion and wellness component involved me creating and delivering lesson plans on MyPlate, sugar-sweetened beverages, and smart snacking to first through twelfth graders. I also conducted research on the prevalence of  diabetes in California and then developed a manual on diabetes education and management for the Wellness Pantry. I also developed graphic materials including a handout and presentation.

COMMUNICATING WITH THE PUBLIC

Module 5

I developed and strengthened my communication skills by creating handouts for middle and high school students and delivering lessons to children of all ages. I also evaluated material created and then re-edited for a lower reading level.

EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH

Module 6

All of the material I created was made using evidence-based research. The reference lists are included.
